Haiti - Environment : Official launch of the Hurricane season 2017
Yesterday, Thursday, June 1st, the President of the Republic, Jovenel Moïse, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Dr. Jack Guy Lafontant, officially launched the Hurricane season 2017 which runs from June 1 to November 30, under the sign of Solidarity and commitment of the public and private sectors in response to the many natural threats faced by Haiti.

The ceremony took place at the National Urgent Operations Center (COUN), Delmas 2, in the presence of, among others, of Minister of the Interior and Territorial Communities, Dr Max Rudolph Saint-Albin, the Presidents of the two Chambers, Youri Latortue and Cholzer Chancy, Parliamentarians, Mayors of the metropolitan area, national and international partners of the State, members of the Civil Society and the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC)...

"Preparation actions for the Hurricane season, both at the central and departmental levels, have been initiated in the first months of the year and will continue throughout the season," said Dr Max Rodolphe Saint-Albin, Minister of the Interior and Local Authorities, which pointed out some of the actions already undertaken, such as: workshops; the national contingency plan for 2017 which is completed; the continuing public awareness; the list of temporary shelters identified and theoperating manual of the COUN almost entirely revisited; the almost entirely revisited;brigadiers; etc...

President Moïse wanted this year to send a signal of strong commitment to public policy in the field of risk and disaster management. In his speech he called for joint efforts and the mobilization of all sectors to address the multiple vulnerabilities of the Haitian population and the accelerated degradation of the environment.

"It is first and foremost a matter of continuing to raise awareness the population of the threats that will bring the first 6 months for their personal safety and of their property [...] I therefore call on all sectors to continue efforts for a pooling of resources. I encourage state and civil society actors to come together and redouble their vigilance [...] I will be at your side with the entire government to accompany you throughout this worrying period," continued the Head of State.

While welcoming the efforts of the State and its partners, in particular the World Meteorological Organization, for the establishment of the Hydrometeorological Unit of Haiti https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-21043-icihaiti-security-new-building-of-the-hydro-meteorological-service.html , President Jovenel Moïse insisted on the need to give each citizen of messages and positive role models to adopt during the season. It is for the Head of State a new model of participatory governance, with the collaboration of all the powers of the State, which must be put in place for the success of the actions during the season.

It therefore encourages a legal framework for civil protection in Haiti, which will enable the country to catch up in this sector and better organize the Haitian Civil Protection. According to the Head of State, this framework will also be a means of paying tribute to the sustained efforts of the Directorate of Civil Protection and the various partners to provide the country with a strong system.
