Haiti - Security : Strengthening of the seismic monitoring network 06/03/2018 10:24:05
In response to frequent and recent earthquakes recorded by the national seismic monitoring network and felt by the people of different communities in the country, the Ministry of the Environment (MDE) and the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME) perform a network reinforcement operation.
To this end, additional seismic equipment consisting of two complete seismological stations and 6 seismometers and 6 Gurlap brand accelerometers, obtained through technical and financial assistance from Mexico, Spain and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will complement the existing network which currently covers the departments of North, West, South-East and Center.
This equipment will be distributed, on the one hand, in the departments of Grande-Anse in Jérémie and in the North-West to the Mole Saint-Nicolas and on the other hand, in the areas that present some seismic activity in recent times. Departments not yet covered, such as Artibonite, Nippes and the South remain priority.
