Haiti - Social : Reduction in the food cost for subcontracting workers

As part of the Government's action plan, Charles Jean Jacques, Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, in the presence of members of the Tripartite Commission (employers, government, union), whose among other Me Renan Hedouville (Representative of State) and Mr. Louis Fignolé St Cyr (representing the labor sector), Bernard J. Chetiny, Director of the National Society of Industrial Park (SONAPI) and representatives of workers and small merchants, released at the conference room of the SONAPI, the findings of the Commission which led to the materialization of the project to reduce the cost of food for subcontracting workers (sous-traitance).

"This is a victory for the workers," declared the Minister Jean Jacques. "The worker will only pay 20 gourdes for food," stating that the public subsidy will be 15 gourdes per plate of food. The cost of this measure for the current year is 92 million gourdes and will benefit 11,800 workers of SONAPI, 1,900 in he Caracol Industrial Park and 7,000 of the Industrial Development Company (CODEVI), located in the free zone of Juana Mendez in Haiti.

In contrast, workers in the same sector outside industrial parks will benefit of meals from the mobile canteen of Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES) in good condition and regular hours.

Beneficiaries have applauded this component of Social Assistance Program of the Administration Martelly-Lamothe and welcomed the Government's efforts to also address the problem of transport and accommodation for workers, as announced by Minister Jean Jacques, who said he was well aware of the issue of minimum wage https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-9993-haiti-news-some-news-here-and-there.html

"This project of accompaniment of workers in the sector of outsourcing, is part of the vision of the Government in term of Social Assistance," said Minister Jean Jacques,

who hoped for a better performance of workers and concrete socio-economic impact of this initiative on their living conditions.
