Haiti - Economy : Businesses vandalized, employees attacked... 14/12/2013 10:42:35 "The events of 10 and 11 December in the area of Industrial Park Port-au-Prince are extremely worrying and must challenge all sectors of Haitian Society. Individuals claiming to be of the Sector Trade Union takes, for two days, more than 30,000 Haitian families in hostage. Businesses were vandalized, staff attacked both verbally and physically. The Constitution and laws of our country to recognize and guarantee to our citizens fundamental rights and freedoms such as the Right to strike, Right to demonstrate, Right to Work and Right to Property. These rights, if they are recognized and guaranteed, should not be confused with bullying and violence. Today, the work was interrupted, the commands are not executed and exports do not take place. Over 30,000 direct jobs are threatened besides the 40 to 60.000 indirect jobs that depend on it. All efforts to attract foreign investors to come take risks in Haiti, create sustainable jobs for our people, that are much needed are being squandered. This situation created by revolutionaries of salon and manipulative and irresponsible politicians, does the trick of our foreign competitors, that will, quickly recover the commands that can not delivery the assembly plants in the metropolitan area. The Nation and the Haitian State should not tolerate troublemakers ! The Private Sector Economic Forum urges the Haitian Government to take all necessary measures to enable the resumption of work while ensuring the safety of employees and factories. Public action must be set in motion against the 'thugs' and their sponsors. It invites all sectors concerned to Social Dialogue which can only be be done and must be done with calm and serenity. Violence and chaos will only result in unemployment and poverty. All work in the establishment of a business climate attractive able to protect and safeguard existing jobs and likely to attract the creators of new jobs and wealth investment." In addition, Charles Castel, Governor of the Central Bank of Haiti (BRH) is worried about these social movements in the area of subcontracting declared "We would not like that this makes us lose investment."
