Haiti - Tourism : The Minister of Tourism meets with leaders of the Île-à-Vache

Following the demonstrations of Friday, December 27, 2013, where a few hundred residents of Île-à-Vache (IAV), especially from the areas of Madame Bernard, Apointes, Baleraz and Soled had especially from the areas of Madame Bernard, Apointes, Baleraz and Soled had demonstrated on the island, to express their fears of being displaced from their property to make way for new hotels, tourist sites and public infrastructure,which will be built as part of the "tourist destination Île-à-Vache" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10192-haiti-tourism-land-issues-anticipated-for-ile-a-vache.html Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin, the Minister of Tourism, met Friday, January 10, 2014, dozens of leaders and members of the community of the island.

In addition to the Minister, the panel was composed of Fritz César, President of the Municipal Council of the island of Fresner Dorcin, Secretary of State for Plant Production and René Hubert, oordinator of the Steering Committee of projects IAV.

After a presentation of the project by the Minister of Tourism various leaders and members of the public were invited to present their concerns. The location of the airport, the future of fisheries and agriculture on the island, titles issue and relocation of some residents were among other things, the main points discussed at these discussions that lasted nearly three hours.

Following clarifications provided by the Minister Villedrouin, several participants were more cooperative.

Part of the population of the town of Mme Bernard, who had attended the intervention of the Minister on the Public Square reacted favorably by learning, it was never a question to expel the inhabitants of the municipality.

However, some members of local associations have expressed hope that the dialogue will continue with a view of a better understanding of the project and socio-economic benefits for the population.

Responding positively to this request, the Minister promised further workshops with members of the community in order to dispel any discomfort and misunderstanding and clearly inform the public on the merits of the tourism development project of Île-à-Vache.
