Haiti - Politic : Toward the development of Gonâve Island
Friday, under the vision of President Michel Martelly, to provide the country, in particular the communes, of tools for their development and adequate supervision to facilitate their growth, an important inter-ministerial delegation chaired by the Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation, went at the request of the Minister of Planning, Laurent Lamothe, on the Gonâve Island (île de la Gonâve), particularly in the commune of Anse-à-Galets, in order to achieve a consultation on the priority needs of the borough.

Composed of Marie Carmelle Rose Anne Auguste, the Delegate Minister of Human Right and the fight against extreme poverty, Mimose Felix, the Delegate Minister for promotion of the peasantry, Maxime Chérestal, the Director of the Office of Minister of Planning, various representatives of the Ministries of Social Affairs, Agriculture, Justice, Health, and the Coordinator of the national social program "Ede Pèp", the delegation met for several hours with members of the community of Anse-à-Galets including the mayors of two communes and representatives of different sectors of civil society around the economic development of the area.

This meeting allowed the delegation to present the various actions and perspectives of their respective institutions for the development of the island. Citizens who did not hide their satisfaction, took the opportunity to make an inventory of development in Gonâve, explain the major problems, their causes and viable solutions.

The islanders have proposed to the Government a number of projects for the advancement of their community, such as the reconstruction of the police station of Anse-à-Galets ; the appointment of clerics in communal sections ; he implementation of community restaurants ; the development of projects related to the protection of gullies ; the establishment of systems of water retention ; the strengthening of the cultivation of melons ; the management of dispensaries iat n communal sections ; the training of health workers ; the development of a health plan for the town of Anse-à-Galets. They also asked the government to strengthen the social assistance program "Ede Pèp" at the island. For their part, farmers, fishermen, artisans and small businesses have sought government support to strengthen their activities.

After this first meeting, it was agreed that a team of technicians will be deployed on the Gonâve Island, for further diagnosis to enable the Government to prepare an effective development plan of communes of Anse-à-Galets and of Pointe-à-Raquette.
