Haiti - Environment : Local Manufacturing and distribution of efficient stoves

In order to help reduce the demand for firewood, deforestation and environmental protection and with funding from CARITAS-Bilbao (Spain), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), has completed the manufacture and distribution of approximately 1,600-efficient stoves in the rural community of Arreguy-Jacmel, a project initiated in 2011.

These stoves manufactured locally, very effective, robust and secure, have a long life. It feature a combustion chamber, which insulates the body from heat and works with small pieces of wood. Producing little smoke, they can be used indoors, an advantage when the rainy season. They are used by households and especially by micro-enterprises who are selling food.

Given the positive results, CARITAS has made available additional financial resources to expand the project in 2014 and build more than 1,000 new stoves in Arreguy, both for local needs and for those of other communities in the region. At the end of the project, the creation of a small business is expected, which will be responsible for manufacturing and selling these stoves to meet the growing demand.
