Haiti - Education : MENFP appeals for calm

Deeply concerned by the strike initiated by the teacher union platform (CONEH, GIEL, UNNOEH, NECH, FENATEC) and student protest movements to demand the presence of teachers in the classrooms, the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) launched an appeal for calm to avoid regrettable slippage and protect the best interests of the school and serenity necessary to meet the challenges of the refoundation of the education sector.

The Ministry invites teacher associations to resume their dialogue started around their claims whose the process has already begun with, among others: the proposal of the particular status of educational staff including the career plan, the social benefits and the revised educational staff salary grid.

In accordance with instructions of President Michel Martelly https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10347-haiti-politic-important-meeting-between-president-martelly-and-the-minister-of-education.html , the Ministry reaffirms that all measures have been taken to continue the regularization (appointment) of practicing teachers that meet the profile required by the Ministry.

In addition, the Ministry informs that a Commission "ad hoc" was created in order to revive this Wednesday the dialogue with representatives of the teacher union sector about their claims. The Commission is composed of Senator Lucas, President of the Education Commission of the Senate ; the Deputy Élie Blaise, President of the Education Commission of the Chamber of Deputies ; a representative of the Ministry of Economy and Finance ; a representative of the Primature ; a epresentative of the Presidency and two representatives of minsitry.

For its part, the National Union of Haitian Normaliens (UNNOH) announced a series of protests, including a manifestation of teachers across the country and two-day strike on 29 and 30 January 2014, in order to require satisfaction of their long list of demands...
