Haiti - Economy : Index of Consumer Prices (December 2013)

After a slowdown in the pace of price increases in November (+0.1%) against (+0.2%) in October, the General Index of Consumer Prices (base 100 in August 2004) for the month of December 2013 has undergone an increase of +0.4%. However, yoy change remains the same as the previous month, or 4.2%.

The monthly increase observed is the result of the evolution of all consumption functions such as "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (+0.5%), "Apparel, Textiles and Footwear" (+0.4%), "Rent Housing Energy and Water "(+0.2%), "Development and maintenance of housing" (+0.3%), "Health" (+1.3%) and "Other Goods and Services" (+0.6%). Note that the "Transport" and "Leisure, Entertainment functions Education and Culture" almost stagnated (+0.1%).

The function "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" which had dropped on average 0.1% over the past three months, has accelerated during the month of December 2013. The items hat contributed most to this increase are rice (+0.1%), ground corn and wheat flour (+0.2%), bread (+1.0%), meat in general, which ranged from + 0.1% to +1.2%, pasteurized milk (+2.3%), the advocate (+1.4%), sweet potatoes (+0.7%), potatoes (+0.9%), the giraumon (+4.7% ), lemon (+6.5%) and beer (+1.7%).

Note that the increase in the "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" function comes particularly from the monthly price increases of tissue (+0.7%), costume, universal jacket (+1.2%), shirts (+0.7%), pants for men (+0.5%) and dress (+0.6%).

Inflationary pressures of the "Health" function is consecutive to prescription glasses (+1.0%), the fees paid to doctors (+2.9%) and laboratory analysis (+0.2%).

Finally, the increase in "Other Goods and Services" is mainly due to the shampoo (+0.6%), perfume, eau de toilette (+1.2%), powder toilet (+2.2%) and to the body cream (+2.4%), others products stagnated.

Clothing and fabrics, shoes: 6.3%

Rent housing, energy and water: 0.2%

Development and maintenance of housing: 2.1%

Health: 3.5%

Transport: 2.6%

Leisure, entertainment, education and culture: 8.8%

Other goods and services 6.5%

General Price Index by Region (Variation on a month) :

Metropolitan Area: +0.2% (Includes Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquets.)

Rest West: +0.5% (includes departments of SouthEast and West excluding the Metropolitan Area)

South: +0.4% (including the departments of North, Northeastern and Northwest)

South: +0.5% (including departments of South Grand Anse and Nippes)

Transversal: +0.5% (including departments of Central and Artibonite)
