Haiti - Economy : Haitian Businessmen Mission in Mexico
The Haitian Consortium of Contractors in the Construction in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI) and the Embassies of Mexico in Haiti and that of Haiti in exico with the support of Pro mexico and of Mexican Entrepreneurial Council for Foreign Trade and Investment (COMCE) are organizing a trade mission to Mexico from 17 to 20 February 2014. The latter will be headed by Luc Especa, CEO of MCI and will be composed of more than 25 Haitian companies.

Will also participate in this round business, Bernard Schetini, the Director General of the SONAPI, Henri Claude Poitevien, Coordinator of the HOPE Commission and Rhode Préval, Director of Free Zones, an autonomous directorate of MCI.

"Haiti is a promising market for Mexico, while the latter is a source of expertise for commercial and industrial businesses in Haiti where we can
establish sustainable partnerships. This mission is part of the commitment of both Haitian and Mexican governments to propel their businesses to new markets and generate benefits," declared the Ambassador of Haiti to Mexico, Guy Lamothe, to Haitilibre during a telephone interview.

Mexican and Haitian aims several objectives through this mission :

  • Allow Haitian private companies and state institutions to become familiar with the Mexican market and build lasting relationships potential both in terms of trade than technology transfer ;
  • Support Haitian entrepreneurs to initiate or continue their efforts to discover new supply markets ;
  • Strengthen Haiti ties with Mexico, especially with the COMCE institution with which the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Haiti (CCIH) has signed a cooperation agreement in March 2013 ;
  • Initiate contacts with the Cámara Nacional de la Industria de la Transformación de Mexico (CANACINTRA) ;
  • Promote Mexican expertise in Haiti especially in the field of construction.

Companies that will participate in the multi-sectoral mission dominated by construction, are active in many areas of the Haitian economy: construction, information technology, communication, building materials, signage, the architecture etc... They can take advantage of individual meetings "one and one" organized by the COMCE with customers, distributors or Mexican producers.

With its technology and experience of industrial parks and free zones Mexico will expand its network of relationships in Haiti while SONAPI and the DZF will increase their expertise and take advantage of "best practices" Mexican. International collaborations in research and innovation will therefore be prioritized in order to attract more foreign direct investment in Haiti.

This strategy should allow Haiti to consolidate recent progress being made and provide the country with adequate structure and competitive businesses internationally. It should be noted that Haiti represents a market of 10 million inhabitants and a construction booming since the 2010 earthquake.

"Mexico has the skills and resources to meet the growing needs of Haiti. The trade mission also represents an excellent opportunity to promote the benefits of Haiti as a consumer market with aims to strengthen its domestic production. We will showcase the strengths of Haiti to attract major projects, strategic partnerships and new investments in both manufacturing, in industrial parks," added Guy Lamothe.

The economic dynamism of Mexico makes of it currently one of the growing markets and is located at the heart of major agreements with both the U.S. and several countriesand groups of countries in Central and Latin Americas. Haiti is now the fifth largest trading partner of Mexico in the region. From 2001 to 2012, trade between the two countries have accused a growth rate of around 600% to reach some $ 62 million.
