Haiti - Agriculture : FAO donates $500k for the Bas Northwest

Friday, Frits M.J. Ohler, Resident Representative in Haiti of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Thomas Jacques, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development proceeded to the signature of a donation agreement of 500,000 U.S. dollars to finance a project of agricultural emergency assistance to the rural populations affected by drought in the communes of "Bas" Northwest.
The Minister of Agriculture stated that this contribution will enable the Government to proceed with the distribution among others of : agricultural inputs, farming tools, insecticides and seed to 9,000 farming families affected by drought in 2013, in the region of "Bas" Northwest to take advantage of the next rainy season. In addition, Thomas Jacques informed that he was in discussions with FAO officials to extend the program to other cities of "Bas" Northwest.
Frits M.J. Ohler, reiterated the commitment of FAO to continue its technical assistance efforts in Haiti and pledged to work to obtain additional financing in order to contribute to the implementation of the Haitian Agricultural Recovery Plan Triennial (2013-2016).
