Haiti - Politic : ECOSOC is encouraged by progress made in the country

The Ad Hoc Advisory Group of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) completed last Thursday, a four-day visit to Haiti in order to seek views from a broad range of actors on the ongoing situation in Haiti and the evolving nature of the international community’s engagement and support to the country.

The Group, helk talk with among others President Martelly, Prime Minister Lamothe, Parliamentarians and other officials, representatives of the Haitian civil society, as well as the United Nations in Haiti and development partners, ECOSOC Group said it is encouraged by progress made in the recovery process and the noticeable increase in economic activity, and notes the recent efforts to hold elections this year. It is also aware of the serious challenges that remain at the humanitarian, economic, social, political, and security levels.

In this context, the Group will continue to follow closely the situation in Haiti and will provide its conclusions and recommendations to the United Nations Economic and Social Council later this year.
