Haiti - Economy : Index of Consumer Prices (April 2014)

The General Consumer Price Index (base 100 in August 2004) increased again during the month of April 2014 with a level of 214.7 against 213.5 in March, accusing the same monthly increase that last month (0.6%) and an increase in YOY (3.5%) higher than that of the previous month (3.2%).

The monthly increase is the result of the evolution of functions

"Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (+0.8%), "Apparel, Textiles and Footwear" (+0.6%), "Development Equipment and Maintenance of Housing" (+0.5%), "Health" (+1.5%) and "Other Goods and Services" (+0.7%).

Among the products that have most influenced the increase of the function "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" are found : ice (+0.2%), millet (+0.3%), corn grain (+0.3%), beef, goat and chicken to respectively (+0.7 %), ham (+1.4%), fresh fish (+2.0%), cod (+0.9%), cheese (+0.7%), eggs (+1.0%), coconut (+ 0.8%), avocado (+2.0%), mushroom (+2.3%), grapefruit, chadèque (+2.1%) and lemon (+11.2%).

Note that the increase of the function "Apparel, Textiles and Footwear" particularly comes from the monthly price increases in tissue (+0.5%), costume, universal jacket (+1.1%), shirts (+0.5%), pants for men (+1.0%), dress, tailoring, shoes and sandals and tennis which increased (+0.8%).

The rising price of bed linen (+1.5%), curtains (+0.9%), tablecloth (+0.7%), refrigerator (+2.7%) and miscellaneous services are mainly based on the progression of the function "Development, Equipment and Maintenance of Housing".

Inflationary pressures of the function "Health" is consecutive to drug prices (+0.4%), the prescription glasses (+3.0%), the fees paid to doctors (+2.5%), laboratory analysis, radiography (+0.7%) and hospitalization costs (+1.5%).

Finally, apart from toilet paper, shoes cleaning and phone subscription for all items of the function "Other Goods and Services" trended upward.

Development and maintenance of housing : 3.9%

Health : 7.0%

Transport : 0.7%

Other goods and services : 2.1%

Apparel and textiles, footwear : 6.9%

Rent housing, energy and water : 0.1%

Development and maintenance of housing : 43%

Health : 5.2%

Transport : 2.7%

Leisure, entertainment, education and cultural : 11.8%

Other goods and services : 7.8%

General Price Index by Region (Variation on a month) :

Metropolitan Area: +0.7% (Includes Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquets.)

Rest West: +0.5% (includes departments SouthEast and West excluding the Metropolitan Area)

North: +0.7% (including the departments of North, Northeastern and Northwest)

South: +0.4% (including departments of South Grand Anse and Nippes)

Transversal: +0.6% (including departments of Centre and Artibonite)
