Haiti - Politic : The Haitian community in DR requires free IDs

In response to a request by President Danilo Medina, of the Dominican Republic and the Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, of Haiti, the Organization of American States (OAS) has prepared a working document "Diagnostic on the Identification of Haitian Migrants Residents in the Dominican Republic".

The OAS has requested that the appropriate authorities from each Government offer their observations and suggestions. Once it receives that input, if so requested, the Hemispheric Institution will seek financial assistance from the international community.

As stated in the document of diagnostic of the OAS, the sole authority for providing national documentation to Haitian nationals, including birth certificates, national identity cards and passports, lies exclusively with the Government of Haiti.

As part of the launch of Project of Identification and Documentation of Immigrant Haitians (PIDIH). Ambassador Cinéas and the Minister Guillaume II, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) in tour in the Dominican Republic, guaranteed at a press conference last Tuesday, that in less than a month, the PIDIH would be launched to provide a birth certificate, passport and identity card to its citizens residing in the Dominican Republic at a cost of 2,500 pesos (± 58 U.S. dollars) per adult (150 pesos for children). They also said that the Haitian Government had not received any financial assistance from Venezuela or the Organization of American States (OAS), and that the $ 10 million needed for this program, come from the Haitian public treasury.

At the same time, the Haitian community in the Dominican Republic, bringing together different organizations of Haitian immigrants, workers, students, traders, businessmen and professionals filed Wednesday at the Embassy of Haiti in Santo Domingo, a paper requesting that the Haitian authorities to demonstrate responsibility and put in execution in all emergency special staffing process of documents, which should be FREE for Haitians living in the Dominican Republic...
