Haiti - Education : The teacher can become an agent of destruction and of socialization if...

Sunday, the communal coordination of the National Union of Haitian Normaliens (UNNOH) of Petit-Goâve commemorated the World Day of the Teacher, which was held under the theme "the teacher, a transforming agent of being human". A debate conference hosted by two young teachers Jeff Milcar Dorcé and Gétheau Lindor was organized in the auditorium of the Sacred Heart school in Petit-Goâve.

In his speech, Jeff Milcar Dorcé called on teachers of Haiti to fully assume their responsibility for the proper transformation of the students stating that "[...] the teacher can become as transformer agent, an instrument of destruction, of socialization, of reproduction of social exclusion if he does not apprehend the social reality of Haiti, it is not aware of his true role, if he is not aware of what it provides to learners [...]

It is up to the teacher, not to unconsciously become a factor, an element of desocialisation by inculcating to studets only the values, currents, patterns of the West and ignoring the national culture, the realities of society, the work done in the field, the thinkers of the community where the child evolves."

In summary, Professor Jeff Milcar Dorcéx warned the Haitian teachers against this unconscious practice "[...] of social exclusion and acculturation of Haitian schoolchildren. We must allow them to reflect on the country's problems, they must be taught the great Haitian authors," recommending the inclusion of voodoo and Haitian Creole in education.

For his part Gétheau Lindor defined what should be the mission of the Haitian Haitian school "The Haitian school should be a place for socializing, learning to live together, to live in harmony. It has a humanizing mission to promote the coexistence of people [...] We have currently in Haiti, a school that reproduces, as in colonial times, domination relations between masters and slaves, we need to change this type of school. We need a real school that trains citizens valid [...]"

At the end of the day, a plaque of honor and merit was awarded to a career educator, Mrs. Ovide Jean Georges who thanked the initiators of this activity.
