Haiti - Duvalier : Amnesty International criticizes the President Martelly

"The death of Jean-Claude Duvalier https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12203-haiti-flash-former-president-jean-claude-duvalier-died-update-2.html must not be used to brush away the crimes committed under his regime. An entire network of volunteer militia and state authorities are also suspected of perpetrating human rights violations under Duvalier's command. These people too must be investigated and, if there is sufficient admissible evidence, prosecuted in fair trials," declared Tuesday Erika Guevara Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty International adding "Whereas President Martelly could have expressed compassion for the thousands of victims of Duvalierism and participated in forging memories about the crimes committed at that time, he willingly decided to express 'sadness' and 'sympathy' only for Duvalier’s family. This is a slap on the face for human rights and the victims’ struggle to justice."

Furthermore in Montreal, the Committee Against Impunity and for Justice in Haiti (CCIPJH) was outraged to learn that the Haitian Government would make a state funeral to a dictator, "a slap more for the hundreds of alive or dead victims of his regime the entire Haitian people."

The CCIPJH, in collaboration with the Collective against Impunity of Haiti and the Haiti House of Montreal, will hold a public meeting this Wednesday, October 8, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Office of the Haitian community of Montreal (BCHM) 6970 Marquette Street, Montreal H2E 2C7 (corner Bélanger - metro Fabre) where will be discussed in particular the update of the record of demand for justice for the victims of the Duvalier regime and the position on the state funeral planned for Jean-Claude Duvalier. Will intervene in this evening : Danièle Magloire, Coordinator of the Collective against Impunity of Haiti, Jan J. Dominique, Spokesperson of the Committee against impunity and justice (CCIPJH) of Montreal and Marjorie Villefranche, Director General of the Haiti House.
