Haiti - FLASH : Former President Jean-Claude Duvalier died (UPDATE 2)
According to the statement of the Political Adviser Calvin Cadet and several other reliable sources including the Minister of Health Florence D. Guillaume, the former President of Haiti Jean-Claude Duvalier "Baby Doc" born July 3, 1951 in Port-au-Prince, he became at the age of 19 years the 41th president of the Republic of Haiti from 1971 to 1986 after the death of his father, François Duvalier died at the age of 63 years this Saturday at his home of a heart attack...

"The family called us this morning to send a helicopter ambulance after his heart attack, we have not had time to transport him, we tried to provide care on site then we recognized the death," declared the Minister of Health, Florence Duperval Guillaume.

Recall that Duvalier had returned to Haiti, accompanied by his wife Veronique Roy, on January 16, 2011 after 25 years in exile [7 February 1986] https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-2137-haiti-duvalier-definitive-return-or-short-stay.html

The President of the Republic, Michel Joseph Martelly declared after being informed of the disappearance of J-C Duvalier "On behalf of the entire Government and people of Haiti, I take advantage of this sad occasion to extend my sincere sympathies to his family, his relatives and his supporters across the country. Despite our quarrels and our differences, let's salute the departure of a true son of Haiti. Love and reconciliation must always overcome our quarrels. May your soul rest in peace."

Lucien Jura, the spokesman of the Presidency declared, "I extend my sincere sympathies to the family of Jean-Claude Duvalier and his family across the country."

"Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti. The return of the former President to Haiti in 2011 presented an opportunity for the country to comprehensively address the painful memories of its recent past through the required processes of accountability and of reconciliation, the pursuit of which should continue", indicated Sandra Honoré, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General in Haiti.

"It's a shame that the Haitian justice system could not bring 'Baby Doc' Duvalier to trial before he died," declared Reed Brody, Counsel and Spokesperson for Human Rights Watch.

Remember also that after his return to Haiti January 16, 2011, on 18 January of the same year he was accused of diversion of funds, abuse of power, theft and corruption; a year later a judge ordered his his dismissal before a criminal court, and does not retain any prosecution for crimes against humanity, saying the facts were prescribed https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-4845-haiti-justice-judge-carves-recommends-that-duvalier-is-tried-for-embezzlement-of-public-funds.html On February 28, 2013 J-C Duvalier appeared before the Court of Appeal of Port-au-Prince, and on 21 February 2014 the Court of Appeal decides that he can be tried for crimes against humanity. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10576-haiti-justice-bouncing-in-the-case-jean-claude-duvalier.html
