Haiti - Health : The Government is preparing to face the Ebola virus

On Wednesday, Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe met with Dr. Florence Duperval Guillaume, Minister of Public Health and Population (MSPP) and Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of National Education and Vocational Training around the Government's response plan in case of an outbreak of Ebola in Haiti.

This response plan to the epidemic of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, developed by the MSPP, aims to prepare the public and our health system to deal with any eventuality and minimize mortality in the event of infected people. A committee composed of government ministers, officials of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and international partners has been formed to monitor the epidemic in the world and make changes to the plan if the situation required it.

To prevent and anticipate the emergence of the virus, a set of measures have been taken, including the establishment of a system of health checks at entry points at airports, ports, the land and sea border and the application of prescription of the International Health Regulations (IHR).

At the airport, audiovisual messages on screens, said the Minister of Health "We have already placed at the airport large screens that broadcast all day long commercials announcing measures to avoid catching the virus [...] We will also assist the staff at our airports with specific training on precautions to be taken face people who may be infected with this virus."

Furthermore, the Government seeks to create a space in the airport, that can accommodate persons suspected to be infected with the virus. Finally, at the base of MINUSTAH, a containment center was built to isolate anyone with Ebola and prevent the contamination from spreading.

The Prime Minister calls the population to calm and not follow the rumors or succumb to panic and ensures that the Government will meet its responsibilities, confirming that, to date, no cases of Ebola was detected nor disclosed in Haiti.
