On Thursday, President Michel Martelly, accompanied by his wife Sophia Martelly, went to Gonaïves (Artibonite), to participate in the ceremony commemorating the 211 years of the Independence of Haiti. A ceremony that took place under the sign of unity, the national dialogue, reconciliation, solidarity and above all hope.

The Head of State first attended the traditional Te Deum at St. Charles Borromeo Cathedral of the City of Independence, during which the Mgr. Yves-Marie Péan wished Haitians "a year 2015 of constructive dialogue, consensus, national reconciliation..."

The President Martelly then went at the monument of Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Independence hero to deposit a wreath of flowers in memory of our ancestors and to officially rise the Flag.

"We missed a lot of opportunities to consolidate the gains that have left us our ancestors. We lost too much time... That's what makes, among others, we walk backwards in many areas... But we can still catch up, because it is not too late..." declared in his speech for the occasion, the President Martelly in the presence of the Prime Minister appointed Mr. Evans Paul [pending ratification], the interim Prime minister designated Ms. Florence Duperval Guillaume, the President of the National Assembly, Simon Dieuseul Desras, the President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, Me Anel Alexis Joseph, members of the outgoing Government, representatives of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps of local authorities, as well as thousands of people gathered on the Place d'Armes.
