Haiti - USA : The United States committed for $120 million 07/10/2010 10:27:29
The United States on Wednesday signed a contribution agreement of $120 million with the Haiti Reconstruction Fund (HRF). Cheryl Mills, Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said that 75% of this amount is intended primarily for debris removal and housing. The remaining 25% will be devoted to education, business loans and budgetary support from the government. However it is not clear whether that money comes from the commitment of 1.15 billion from the USA [as expected] provided for the reconstruction of Haiti, or if additional funds, or when this money will really be disbursed. Former President Bill Clinton Wednesday deplored the delay in his own country to concretize its pledge, a situation due to the blocking of Tom Coburn, Republican Senator from Oklahoma who challenged the appointment of a senior coordinator for Haiti for the management of this aid and the budget of 5 million to fund the coordinator and his team. Finally, the announcement by Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State, of the nomination of Thomas C. Adams as Special Coordinator for Haiti, which will be responsible for the U.S. Government's commitment to Haiti, raised last blocking to the payment of this aid. The United States should [in theory] start to honor their engagements in the next days or weeks. See also: S/ HaitiLibre
