Haiti - Economy : Haiti becomes the gateway of Mexico in CARICOM
Thursday, on the sidelines of World Economic Forum for Latin America that brought together leaders and entrepreneurs from various countries of the world in Riviera Maya (Mexico) and one year after President Michel Martelly, has proposed to his Mexican counterpart Enrique Peña Nieto to make of Haiti the Mexico's gateway to CARICOM, an important step has been taken with the signing between the two countries, of an Agreement on Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments (APPRI).

The agreement was initialed by Jude Hervé Day, Haitian Minister of Commerce, and Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, Mexican Secretary of the Economy, in the presence of Presidents Martelly and Peña Nieto.

Under the terms of this agreement, Mexican companies producing in Haiti will be able to export, free of customs duties, towards other CARICOM countries. By thus becoming the Caribbean access door for Mexico, Haiti gives itself the opportunity to create jobs on its territory through Mexican investments and for Haitian entrepreneurs interested in investing in Mexico, this agreement also represents protection.

"With the APPRI, Haiti undertakes to facilitate the installation and operation of Mexican companies in its territory [...] We certainly will not see the real fruits of this agreement under my government but we are a team invests for future generations," said President Martelly.

"The signing of this agreement is a plus for the two countries and will help to generate confidence among investors in both countries," said Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. For his part the Mexican chancellor, José Antonio Meade Kuribreña who also attended the signing of the agreement, believes that "it is an instrument that will allow Mexico to support the economic development of Haiti, by providing a framework conducive to investment."

Let us recall that it took three rounds of discussion between the Haitian and Mexican technicians from September 2014 to March 2015, to lead to the final text of this important agreement.
