Haiti - Justice : Towards a new trial of Michael Geilenfeld

The Ministry of Justice is currently reviewing the case against American Michael Geilenfeld, founder in 1985 of the orphanage "Maison Saint-Joseph" in Port-au-Prince accused of abuse against young boys in the orphanage that he directed.

Recall that Michael Geilenfeld (63), a native of Iowa, was arrested in September 2014 following allegations of a physical and sexual assault by five former residents of the orphanage. He was released on 29 April, 2015 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-13742-haiti-justice-the-founder-of-the-orphanage-maison-saint-joseph-acquitted-and-released.html after a judge rejected the case following a brief trial, in which the five plaintiffs now adult, did not appear.

Monday, Pierre-Richard Casimir, the Minister of Justice, explained that this decision will be appealed, arguing that the prosecution "has not handled the case properly and has been sanctioned," claiming that another trial was necessary.

For its part the defense lawyer, Alain Lemithe, said he would return to court to defend the interests of his client.
