Haiti - Music : Follow Jah live on stage !

While it is common to see walking bands occupy the streets of the capital at the time of Carnival, it is rare to see them on stage together with foreign musicians or renowned artists as Emeline Michel and James Germain. As such, the evening of Monday 22 June in FOKAL is doubly unique because it opens the first Meetings of World Music in Port-au-Prince https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-14214-haiti-culture-meetings-of-the-world-music-in-port-au-prince.html with a concert by Trio Ivoire (piano-drum / percussion, balafon), followed by the presentation by the walking band Follow Jah of a unique program designed for the stage, with ten musicians.

In 2011 already, the walking band Follow Jah had experienced a first stage experience with a show of six musicians who had turned in different cultural centers of the country and it has recently resumed at the French Institute of Haiti, as a prelude to Carnival.

This time, the presence of four additional musicians for a total of ten, multiplies the musical combinations to explore the possibilities of the genre. Despite appearances, the walking band is not necessarily limited to retake in the streets the success of Carnival adapted to its format. The Concert of June 22 explores other fields according to available instrumentation: various percussion instruments (drum, drum, tom, scraper, rattle) and winds (bamboo cones). The repertoire naturally includes carnival méringues but also traditional music voodoo, of interpretations of rasin groups, of onpa, incursions into jazz of New Orleans, experiments on cornet and other surprises !
