Haiti - Security : The Pre-election violence and fear reign in Petit-Goâve 12/07/2015 10:31:59 "1. The security situation in Petit-Goâve region already vulnerable and very affected by armed groups, has deteriorated during the pre-election period. According to reliable information, certain parts of the city are considered 'red zones' where citizens can not move freely. If this situation continues until the days of voting, a large portion of voters will not be voting. 2. Repeated shots of firearms, throwing stones and broken bottles at dusk, from the supporters and sympathizers of some candidates are denounced. This situation orchestrated mainly by two parliamentary candidates namely Jacques Stevenson Thimoléon, candidate to succeed himself under the banner of Party PHTK nad Germain Fils Alexandre, candidate under the banner of the platform VERITÉ, creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation which in all evidence is likely to prevent voters from exercising their right to vote. According to credible sources, at least one of these two influential candidates in the race, already seeking to exercise control over the repressive institutions of the city. If nothing is done in Petit-Goâve, only the strongest candidates and the more daring will have control of the ballot box and street on polling days. 3. [...] It is worrying to found that the bandits having performed in daylight and faces uncovered the ransacking of the premises of BEC (May 15 ) Have not been arrested and prosecuted. The organization of elections in Petit-Goâve is therefore trapped and compromised by the lax attitude of the police and judicial authorities in relation to this criminal act against electoral facilities. Therefore, the architects of violence from some political sectors to which they belong, feel free to continue to exercise peacefully and impunity all kinds of things, crimes against public order and the electoral machinery." RNDDH, the CNO and the CONHANE ask the relevant authorities to give greater attention in relation to the development of violence throughout the entire country, particularly in Petit-Goâve region during the electoral period and require all necessary measures are taken to promote equal participation of candidates in the electoral process and recommends that immediate measures of firearms port restriction is taken by the authorities to avoid repeating tragedies and encourage massive participation of voters in the election.
