Haiti - Social : Angry cane cutters, asking 4,6 million gourdes to Haiti

Tuesday, hundreds of sugar cane workers "cañeros" in the Dominican Republic organized a march to demand of Identification Programme and of Documentation of Haitian Immigrants (PIDIH) the reimbursement of 4.6 million pesos they paid to get their birth certificate, identity card and passport, to qualify for the National Plan of Regularization of Foreigners (PNRE).

The trade unionist Jésus Nunez Spokesperson of Cañeros and Coordinator of the Union of sugarcane workers in the bateyes, said that the Embassy of Haiti has not issued the documents and 4,600 cañeros of Haitian origin, paid since January and until this month, each 1,000 pesos for the acquisition of these identity documents to register for the PNRE, which ended on June 17 "So we demand refund !"

Recall that through interventions of Jesus Nunez, the Dominican government has recently decided to grant permanent residence to 2,709 pensioners of the cane, without identity papers https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-14179-haiti-social-the-dominican-authorities-are-assisting-cane-cutters.html https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-14376-icihaiti-social-2-709-sugar-cane-cutters-will-receive-their-permanent-residence.html

Jesus Nunez strongly criticized the fact that Haiti has no recording platform that allow to identifies a person and Núñez railed against Renauld Lener, the Foreign Minister, whom he accuses of lying during his speech to the Organization of American States (OAS) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-14462-haiti-dominican-republic-lener-renauld-request-the-intervention-of-the-oas.html

He estimates that Haiti needs to focus on its nationals rather than hide behind international flags and focus on diplomatic attacks against the Dominican Republic, stating that the Haitian government had bet on the failure of PNRE and forgotten the fate of his compatriots "Any country that would have a border with Haiti would be in the same situation as the Dominican Republic, because Haiti does not document its citizens," raged the Spokesman of Cañeros.

The march took place without incident, framed by the Dominican police, left from the Avenue John F. Kennedy and ended at the Embassy of Haiti where they handed over a document of complaint.

For its part, the Embassy of Haiti in Santo Domingo confirmed "A demonstration of cañeros was held outside the headquarters of the Embassy Tuesday morning, reason why Ambassador Daniel Supplice received urgently their representatives..."
