Professor Jean Vernet Henry, President of the Conference of Rectors, Presidents and leaders of higher education institutions of Haiti (CORPUHA) and his counterpart Professor Armand Moyikoua President of the Rectors' Conference of Francophone Universities of Africa and the Indian Ocean (CRUFAOCI) initialed in the presence of several members of the CORPUHA and Alain Charbonneau, Director of the Caribbean Office of Francophone university Agency (AUF) a South-South inter-university partnership agreement.

The agreement concerns a donation of over 21 million CFA (± 33,000 euros) offered by the CRUFAOCI to the CORPUHA. This sum is a solidarity fund collected by universities members of the CRUFAOCI to support the universities of Haiti hardest hit by the earthquake of 12 January 2010.

The donation increased of a allocation of the AUF will be used for the organization of training workshops and university governance projects for the benefit of member institutions of the CORPUHA and of Haitian higher education system.

In his remarks for the occasion, Moyikoua stressed that this partnership is an African gesture of solidarity towards Haiti in the perspective of synergies with Haitian universities. He indicated in this regard that "the solidarity and friendship have led us to pose that day this historic act. We want consideres it as the basis for a fruitful and lasting cooperation, not only for heads of institutions of both conferences but also between teachers, researchers and students."

Welcoming the fraternal ties that bind Haiti and Africa, the Rector Jean Vernet Henry declared "This is for me the most significant gesture whose have benefited Haitian universities after the quake. In the name of the CORPUHA and on behalf of all Haitians I want to thank our brothers and sisters of Africa for this donation."

Alain Charbonneau, Director of the Caribbean Office of the AUF sees "in this action a very significant gesture to support university governance that is not only one of the key areas of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie but also an important lever of sustainable development of Haitian universities."
