Haiti - Education : Jimmy Borgella, Young Leader for literacy
The International Literacy Association (ILA), a global advocacy and membership organization dedicated to advancing literacy for all, announces that Jimmy Borgella, President and Founder of the social and solidarity organization VIE Jeunes (Volontariat pour l'Intégration et l'Encadrement des Jeunes) from Port-au-Prince, is an honoree named to its inaugural 30 Under 30 list for literacy.

The list recognizes the next generation of young innovators, advocates and educators who are leading efforts to address the challenges of today's evolving education landscape and make a difference in the global literacy landscape.

Jimmy Borgella was selected for his unique contribution to the fight against global illiteracy and within his community. He is promoting literacy through its commitment and level of involvement in the development and coordination with colleague Taïna Tranquille Petit, The Open Books Program of the organization VIE Jeunes. Via this program, He had coordinated in summer 2014, with the support of the Ministry of Education, the National Reading Camp. VIE Jeunes had animated under his leadership, 18 Centres of Reading and animation. This activity pursued three objectives: maintaining reading skills of students in the Basic School; motivate students to learn to read and inspire their interest in and enjoyment of reading; create momentum around reading nationally to enhance the learning in communities.

Also Co-Founder of the Association of Librarians Documentalists and Archivists of Haiti, Mr. Borgella was recently elected for a term of 4 years (2015-2019) to the Standing Committee of "Literacy and Reading Section" of "International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' (IFLA), where he will contribute to the design and coordination of major projects for the promotion of reading and literacy throughout the world.

"I am proud to recognize Jimmy BORGELLA, who is part of a new generation of champions playing a critical role in the future of literacy around the world," said Marcie Craig Post, executive director, International Literacy Association. "Today, an astounding 12 percent of the global population is unable to read or write. These 30 young education champions are developing new, creative strategies to close the literacy gap and, in the process, are transforming lives in their communities and around the world."

ILA's 30 Under 30 list highlights young trailblazers from 13 countries and several different sectors and includes nonprofit leaders, classroom teachers, authors, volunteers, researchers, technology startup founders and entrepreneurs. Each honoree has created and implemented an initiative that has directly improved the quality of literacy instruction or that increased access to literacy tools in the classroom, community and/or online.

ILA's 30 Under 30 honorees are featured in the September/October issue of Literacy Today, ILA's bi-monthly magazine, which published today.
