Haiti - Epidemic : The Dominican Republic closed its border (UPDATE 4h10pm)

The Dominican authorities have decided the temporary closure of its border with Haiti to prevent the spread of cholera, from 8:00 am this Monday, October 25, 2010.

All crossings points of the border are closed: Ouanaminthe (Nord-East), Belladère (Central Department), Malpasse (Department of the West) and Anse a Pitre (Department of South-East). The Dominican Republic has deployed military. Despite this closure, dozens of Haitians have managed this morning to enter the city of Dajabon, crossing river.

MINUSTAH Military units and United Nations police were dispatched to the border on the Haitian side to monitor the smooth of this closure.

Members of the Dominican armed forces prevent the entry of foreigners, under a directive from the Ministry of Public Health. All persons are strictly regulated and must undergo a medical examination first level, where they receive a paper of Public Health, which certifies that they have no symptoms of cholera before they can enter the Dominican territory.

So far, only vehicles of goods from the Dominican Republic to Haiti can still cross the border.
