Haiti - Grande Saline : The cholera victims banned from funeral

"We have decided to bury in mass graves the bodies of unidentified or claimed persons who died of the cholera epidemic in Grande Saline, the region where the number of deaths is most critical" stated today Gabriel Thimothé, the Director General of the Haitian Ministry of Public Health.

The government in accordance with the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which provide logistical support, has taken strict measures to handle the bodies of victims of the epidemic.

"No body can leave the hospital without being disinfected and placed in a plastic body bag," said an official, pointing out that "families of victims can not make the funeral because the deceased must be buried immediately." Moreover, it was decided to form teams at the community level to conduct disinfection of patients dying within their community and the houses where they lived.
