Haiti - Epidemic : Cholera list of communes affected 04/11/2010 20:03:14 Important point : the assessment of Saturday 30, reflects the situation of October 29 and that of November 3 reflects the figures of Sunday, October 31 (!!) Whatever the reasons, communication problems, delays in submitting reports or other... Figures from official organizations within the UN, but not disclosed by the government for the people, for unknown reasons are quite different: Number of people hospitalized (confirmed): Artibonite : 5,094 (figure of October 22 to 31) Center : 1,903 which 1,673 to Mirebalais, 220 in Lascahobas and 10 case in Maissade (figure of October 22 to November 2) North West : 1,084 (figure of October 22 to November 2) For other unknown reasons ... the number of actual deaths (other than government figures) is not available. However, if one refers to the percentage of deaths (constant) on the number of infected people from the 9 assessments published by the government (average death rate 7.34%) (1). It is not wrong to estimate that the number of deaths would be: 8,081 case X 7,34% : 565 deaths Note that we did not include the many cases reported to us by doctors and NGOs on the ground and who are not yet included in the reports of the UN ... (For example: the case of Hinche where more than 50 cases are treated while the town is classified as non-affected). We also found from testimony on the ground that the Department of Public Health and Population (MSPP) was able to confirm a case of cholera in region within 48 hours but that this period became limitless when it was a question of confirming cases in Port-au-Prince or near the capital (some cases are still not confirmed or cancelled by this Ministry)... Finally we find at least curious to read the number of communes affected by cholera, there appears a boundary impenetrable to the virus as soon as one approaches the Capital or South regions, whereas obviously Artibonite, Center, North and Northwest are affected. The Cholera is far from being limited to banks of the Artibonite river as the official version claims it. Our figures, although higher than those of the government, remain lower than reality since certain data go back to several days, and are not compiled yet (Eg figure Artibonite October 30...). In addition, the storm Tomas is a risk factor for significant worsening, Francoise Gruloos-Ackermans, UNICEF's representative in Haiti said "The potential arrival of Tropical Storm Tomas compromises the work to date and represents a new threat of cholera, water-borne disease could be spread by flooding."
