Haiti - UNESCO : First declaration of Michaëlle Jean
Michaelle Jean's former Governor General of Canada was officially named in her new position, Monday in Paris, by the Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Irina Bokova.

Irina Bokova, assured Michaëlle Jean of her whole support "We can count on your intimate knowledge of the land, its people, its culture, to implement the most effective programs, may be better accepted and be sustainable. [...] I would say both for Unesco and for Haiti, I am infinitely pleased that you, Madame Michaelle Jean, have agreed to put your energy into our action".

At a ceremony at the organization's headquarters in Paris, Michaëlle Jean said it was time to put a plan in place to ensure the long-term development of Haiti. Just invested in his new role, Ms. Jean said that the Haitian population was now in need of an "essential solidarity pact" that goes "beyond the logic of assistance" that prevails in Haiti for decades.

My native Haiti, heavily grieving, bloodless more idle than ever since the earth quake in January 12. The disaster continues his gruesome work, now with this epidemic of cholera which has already caused hundreds of casualties and heavy rains caused by Hurricane Tomas, only worsen.

Unesco can certainly be associated with a human development plan, inclusive and sustainable, UNESCO can support the reinforcement of the capacities of governorship, accompany the formation of a public education system, of quality, that meets the needs shouting of the basic education, of the vocational training and higher education, in addition to contributing to the safeguarding and the rebuilding of works, and cultural infrastructures and patrimonial treasures.

Today, in a first working session, I had the opportunity to make an overview of projects underway right now and which act as this direction. In all these areas, UNESCO can play a leading role, I am sure. Unesco can gather and coordinate efforts alongside the Haitian government civil society in Haiti."
