Haiti - Economy : Strong rise in inflation in February

During the month of February 2016 the General Index of Consumer Prices (base 100 in August 2004), which stood at 255.5 in January 2016 rose to 258.7 in February 2016, thus continuing its acceleration upwards in February by of + 1.3% and +14.4% yoy supported by a political climate of uncertainty. Note that due to the weakness of our currency against the US dollar, the price increase has been much more pronounced in imported products (+ 1.4%) than local products (+ 1.1% ).

The functions that have contributed most to this monthly increase of 1.3% are mainly: "Food, drinks and tobacco" (+ 1.2%), "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" (+ 2.1%), "Housing Rent, Energy and water '(+ 1.3%), "Planning and Housing Maintenance" (+ 1.6%) and "Other Goods and Services" (+ 1.4%).

The progress of the function "Food, drinks and tobacco" which represents over 50% of the household budget comes from among others the rice prices (+ 1.3%), millet (+ 1.3%), ground corn (+1, 2%) and wheat flour (1.4%), poultry (+ 1.3%), avocado (+ 1.9%), bananas (+ 2.4%), the giraumont (+ 1.6%), the marker (+ 2.9%), dry peas (+ 1.0%), cabbage (+ 2.5%), tomatoes (+ 1.5%), tomato pulp (+ 1.6%), yams (+ 2.0%), the malanga (+ 1.6%), cassava (+ 2.4%), the potato (+2, 4%), of potatoes (+ 2.8%), orange (+ 2.8%), the chadèque (+ 1.7%), lemon (+ 2.4%), raw sugar (+ 3.4%) and refined sugar (+ 1.3%).

The increase in the "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" function is mainly due to the increase in products such as tissues (+ 2.8%), suit, jacket Universal (+ 2.2%), trousers for men (+ 1.7% ), dress (+ 4.6%), and tennis shoes (+ 2.0%) and sandals (+ 1.8%).

The increase in the function "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" of + 0.9% is mainly due to changes in housing rent (+ 2.2%) and water supply (+ 1.1%).

The increase at the "Development and Housing Maintenance" function is mainly due to lounge furniture (+ 2.2%), dining room (+ 3.2%), bed (+ 3.2%), mattresses (+ 3.9%), bed linen (+ 2.5%), curtains (+ 2.7%), refrigerator (+ 2.8%) and disinfectant (+ 6.6%).

Finally, products that contributed most to the increase in the "Other Goods and Services" are: toothpaste (+ 2.4%), shampoo (+ 3.4%), toilet powder (+5 , 4%) and body cream (+ 5.4%).
