Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : Valerie Amos arrives tomorrow in Haiti

Valerie Amos, the UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, will arrive in Haiti tomorrow Tuesday for a visit of two days. During her visit, the Under Secretary-General will meet with government representatives and UN agencies present in the country.

The official will visit several IDP camps, and various areas affected by cholera, to assess on the ground, the humanitarian action deployed against the epidemic. The last official assessment (dated of November 19, 2010) reported 1.344 deaths and 23.377 cases hospitalized and treated since the beginning of the epidemic (October 19).

The arrival of Valerie Amos comes shortly after that Nigel Fisher, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti, has said "we have received less than 10% [of the 164 million appeal for emergency funds from the United Nations] we urgently need doctors, nurses, systems for purifying water, chlorine tablets, soap, oral rehydration salts, tents for cholera treatment centers and a range of other medical supplies".
