Haiti - FLASH : Bad weather, loss of life and extensive material damage

The rains that fell across all departments of Haiti especially on 6, 7 and 8 May 2016, have caused more or less serious flooding across the country and resulted in the loss of life and important property damage.

Provisional assessment :

To Morne Caillot, 6th communal section of Port-de-Paix, on the morning of Saturday, May 7, a man in his thirties and his wife aged 20, died and 2 people were injured in the collapse of a section of wall of a little house, which housed 5 people.

In Gressier, a 40 year old man was swept away by the waters of "Morne Chandel", early in the morning of May 7. The body of the victim was found downstream to "kolin" water streams crossing the center of this commune of West Department.

In the Southeast department, a man in his sixties died from drowning while attempting to cross the Moreau River in flood, in Bainet.

Moreover, the number of affected families stood at 2,783 and 2,860 houses are flooded, mostly to Baradères in the Department of Nippes.

52 houses were also damaged and 15 destroyed, especially in the departments of the South and Southeast.

Current meteorological conditions under the influence of a cold front associated with a potentially wet air mass near Haiti, still can promote a few showers and thunderstorms in several departments. Given the persistence of bad weather that led to the saturation of the soil, the risk of flooding, landslides and mudslides are important and the Ministry of Interior invites the population to exercise caution, to strictly implement the safety instructions and to continue to follow information around the evolution of the metrological conditions.
