Haiti - Economy : Inflation still rising (May 2016)

During the month of May 2016 a slight slowdown in the price increase was observed resulting in monthly basis by an increase of 0.7% against 0.8% the previous month to stand at 15.1% yoy against 15.2% in April.

The functions that have most contributed to the monthly increase of 0.7% are primarily: "Food, drinks and tobacco" (+ 0.9%), "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" (+ 0.5%), "Housing Rent, Energy and Water "(+ 0.7%)," Planning and Housing Maintenance"(+ 0.8%) and" Other Goods and Services "(+ 0.7%).

The progression of the "Food, drinks and tobacco" function which represents over 50% of the household budget comes from among other of price of ground corn (+ 0.6%), poultry (+ 0.8%) and coconut ( + 3.0%), avocado (+ 1.4%), bananas (+ 3.2%), the pumpkin (+ 2.6%), the marker (+ 3.6%), eggplant (+ 3.9%), cabbages (+ 3.1%), onion (+ 2.2%), carrot (+ 3.5%), tomato (+ 2.1%), tomato paste (+ 1.7%) of yam (+ 2.6%), the malanga (+ 2.4%), cassava (+ 2.5%), the potato (+ 2.5%) and potatoes (+ 4.4%), orange (+1.9 %) of chadèque (+ 2.1%), lemon (+ 2.2%), raw sugar (+ 0.8%) and cocoa powder (+ 3.8%).

The increase in "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" function is mainly due to the increase in products such as costume (+ 1.9%), the dress (+ 1.0%) and tennis shoes (+ 0.5%) and sandals (+ 0.7%).

The increase in the index "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" is mainly due to changes in housing rent (+ 1.1%) and propane gas (+ 0.9%).

Inflationary pressures of the "Planning and Housing Maintenance" function is consecutive to the price of : living room furniture (+ 0.9%), dining room (+ 2.1%), the bed (+ 0.7%), the mattress (+ 1.5%), curtains (+ 1.3%), refrigerator (+ 1.1%), wages of domestic workers (+ 1.8%) and miscellaneous services (+ 1.9%).

Finally, the increase observed at the "Other Goods and Services" function is mainly due to the price of powder shampoo (+ 2.1%), toilet powder (+ 4.2%) and body cream (+ 1.8%).

Apparel and textiles, footwear : 23.7%

Development and maintenance of housing : 22.8%

Transport : 6.7%

Leisure, entertainment, education and cultural : 38.9%

Other goods and services : 18.9%
