Haiti - Elections : Demonstration and violence on the Champs de Mars 05/12/2010 15:14:40
Led by Charles Henri Baker, Jean Henry Céant, Léon Jeune, Garaudy Laguerre, Genard Joseph and Josette Bijou, more than 2,000 protesters very determined, waved red cards chanted « Carton rouge à Préval » « Carton rouge au CEP » and placard « Aba eleksyon tèt anba », « Inite = Kolera », « Aba Selecksyon viv Eleksyon », « Non... Sa pap pase KONSA ». Victor Benoit, Serge Gilles, leaders of Alternative, advocating a transitional government, have been seen in the cortege of protesters. On the Champs de Mars, the demonstration ran up against an important police operation. Protesters threw stones and bottles at police and overturned safety barriers, causing in reaction, the firing of teargas into the crowd, gas which quickly spread to the refugee camps of Champs de Mars, sowing panic. "We will conduct the battle as long as is necessary" has promised Charles Henry Baker. "The results that will be announced Dec. 7, will not stop the movement [...] any president from this process will suffer from a legitimacy deficit," he said. According to several witnesses (in the greatest confusion) reported having heard gunshots. Currently, we have no confirmation of gunfire, their origins, or whether there were casualties.
