Haiti - Politic : The Democrat Congressman Hastings, asks Obama to travel to Haiti

In a letter addressed to President Barack Obama, Florida Democrat Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, invites the American President to travel to Haiti to demonstrate that the United States remains engaged in Haiti, despite the decision not to financially support new Haitian elections https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-17963-haiti-politic-the-united-states-suspend-their-assistance-for-elections-in-haiti.html

"[...]

Dear Mr. President

I write you to encourage you to travel to Haiti in the lead up to that country's October 9, 2016, presidential election. I believe your presence will, especially in light of the decision to forgo providing aid for the upcoming election, make it clear that, though the Administration does not agree with the decision to hold new elections, the Unites States does remain committed to a strong, independent and democratic Haiti.

The electoral situation in Haiti has been, and remains, difficult, complex, and frustrating. However, this frustration must not result in our disengagement from Haiti, but rather must be the source of renewed energy to engage with the country's political leadership and its people. It is undoubtedly in Haiti's interest, and indeed in the interest of the United States, to see Haiti emerges from this difficult time a legitimate and strong democracy, and I believe that your tremendous political capital will be wisely spent by spending time on the ground in Haiti encouraging all of its people to continue to believe in teh power and legitimacy of democracy.

[...]

Alcee L. Hastings

Member of Congress"
