Haiti - Politic : High Level Meeting on Smuggling
This week, the de facto President, Jocelerme Privert, met with Yves Romain Bastien, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Victor H. Saint-Louis, Director General of the General Administration of Customs (AGD) and other State agencies around the government's efforts to fight against smuggling.

Also taking part at this working session Georges B. Sassine President of the Association of Industries of Haiti (ADIH), the Secretary of State for Public Security, former Colonel Himmler Rebu, Antoine Atouriste, Director General of the National Commission of Fight Against Drugs (CONALD), of representatives of the Unit for Combating Corruption (ULCC), of the Central Financial Intelligence Unit (UCREF) and the National Police of Haiti (PNH).

Victor H. St. Louis gave an update on the various operations carried out by his administration, together with the Directorate General of Taxes and the PNH, to eradicate the scourge of smuggling for the Haitian economy including :

  • The audit of business and deposits in search of contraband ;
  • The inspection and seizure of vehicles carrying contraband at the AGD checkpoints ;
  • The creation of mobile brigades in some areas of the capital to identify the various sources and destinations of the smuggled goods.

Mr. St. Louis has appealed for the collaboration of the population, to facilitate the work of customs agents responsible for carrying out this work of control.

Jocelerme Privert said he was very concerned about the issue of smuggling and assured that the means and measures will be strengthened to minimize the losses recorded by public administration in this sector and raise the national economy.
