Haiti - Epidemic : $1MM from Australia to fight against cholera 08/12/2010 15:05:08 Australia joins other countries to help Haiti to fight against the cholera epidemic ravaging its population. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) had said earlier this month that the cholera epidemic in Haiti, could affect up to 650.000 people over the next six months. Kevin Rudd, Minister for Foreign Affairs, announced that Australia, to help Haiti to combat the epidemic cholera, will provide a contribution of $1 million to the United Nations. This donation is part of the call for an emergency fund of $164 million, launched by the UN on November 12. This million dollars will be donated to United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which already supplies drinking water, purification tablets for water, hygiene kits and other essential supplies to the fight against cholera in Haiti. This contribution, is added to the $24 million contribution from Australia in response to the earthquake of January 12.
