Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : 650,000 cases in the next 6 months ! 03/12/2010 13:48:58
The Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today that the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) now estimate that the cholera epidemic in Haiti could affect as many as 650.000 people over the next six months.
In his report to the General Assembly, Mr. Ban also said that UN health teams, believes that the official figures of the Haitian government, 1,800 deaths and nearly 80,000 infected, could be double that because of difficulties in reporting.
Ban Ki-moon reiterated the urgent needs in Haiti : more Cholera Treatment Centres (CTC), 350 doctors, 2,000 nurses and 2,200 support staff. He's also calling on the world's nations to contribute more to the organization's appeal for $164 million to contain the outbreak, saying it's still only 20 percent funded.
