Haiti - Canada : Municipal Cooperation Program
The Union of Quebec Municipalities (UMQ), which has been working for more than a decade to improve the quality of life of communities in Haiti, notably by strengthening local governance, took part this week in Montreal to a workshop that brought together a dozen local elected representatives and representatives of the National Municipal Federations of Haiti. This workshop was organized jointly by the UMQ and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) under the Haiti-Canada Municipal Cooperation Program, implemented by the UMQ, FCM and the City of Montréal in 2011 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-3366-haiti-quebec-the-mayor-of-montreal-met-the-president-michel-martelly.html

Michel Adrien, Mayor of Mont-Laurier, a native of Haiti, at the end of the exchange day declared "I am very pleased to have participated in this meeting which highlighted the essential role of the UMQ, which exercises strong leadership for autonomous and efficient local governments. All the partners gathered also agreed on the importance of strong leadership on the part of local elected officials and strong and rigorous municipal governance to ensure the vitality of the communities, whether they are in Haiti or in Quebec."

The mission of the Haiti-Canada Municipal Cooperation Program delegation will continue until November 15 in Granby, Montreal, Lachute and the MRC d'Argenteuil. Several meetings with elected officials, elected officials and municipal managers, covering the various aspects of municipal management, will be on the agenda.
