Haiti - Quebec : The Mayor of Montreal met the President Michel Martelly
As part of his mission in Port-au-Prince, Mr. Gerald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal, met yesterday with the President Michel Martelly. On this occasion he was accompanied by Frantz Benjamin, Associate Counsel to the communities of different origins to the City of Montreal, Éric Forest, Mayor of Rimouski and President of the Union of Municipalities of Quebec, Muscadin Jean-Yves Jason the Mayor of port-au-Prince, and Jean-Louis Testud, Vice-President of Cités Unies France, which develops projects in the region of the Palmes in Haiti.

During this meeting, the partners and the Head of State have discussed of the importance of the role of local government and of the decentralization in the reconstruction of Haiti. In addition, the Mayor of Montreal presented the various cooperation activities in recent months thanks to the logistical and operational support of the City of Montreal, whose the office of support to the town hall of Port-au-Prince (1), and the lighting project of the parish of Saint-Jude-St-Simon (2). Both projects was inaugurated yesterday and have to the highest point interested the President Martelly.

"The Haitian community in Montreal is the largest diaspora in Canada. It occupies a special place for our administration and also has a role to play in the reconstruction of Haiti. Montreal will continue to support its friendly city, Port-au-Prince, in strengthening its institutional and administrative capacity. A global effort is essential to meet this common challenge, which will contribute to give back to the Haitian people a living environment safe and enjoyable" declared the Mayor of Montreal.

Recall that the Municipal Cooperation Program (MCP) Haiti/Canada benefits of a contribution of $ 7 million from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and donations in services from the city of Montreal and the members of the FCM and the UMQ, of an approximate value of 2 million.

The Martelly President assured his full cooperation in the cooperative projects undertaken by Montreal and its partners in the capital and other Haitian cities.

(1) At the request of citizens of the parish of Saint-Jude-St-Simon (8,000 inhabitants) on the Morne de l'hôpital,Montreal has accompanied the Haitian managers in the implementation of a project of solar street lighting. This project inaugurated Monday, will allow children to study in the evening and citizens to move into the area safely. Other projects designed to improve the direct services to the population, such as water purification and the rehabilitation of small infrastructure, will also be put forward in the coming months.

(2) The Mayor of Montreal participated in the official opening of the office of support to the town hall of Port-au-Prince. Equipped with everything needed for its operation, this office will be the ideal place for training municipal employees and the implementation of projects. The Mayor of Port-au-Prince, Muscadin Jean-Yves Jason, meanwhile, stressed the essential contribution of the cooperation of the City of Montreal in the reconstruction of his city. He thanked particularly the Montreal employees who each month, accompanies the Town Hall in the improvement of services to the population.
