Haiti - Economy : Inflation rising, exceeds BRH forecasts

While forecasts by the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), on an annual basis, projected an inflation rate of 13.9% for November 2016, 14% for December 2016, and 14.4% for the month of January 2017 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-19416-haiti-economy-14-4-inflation-forecast-for-january.html inflation for the month of November 2016 already reaches 14.2%, already higher than the forecast for December 2016.

For the month of November 2016, the General Index of Consumer Prices (base 100 in August 2004) recorded a slight slowdown on a monthly basis, with a monthly change of + 1.5% compared with + 1.8% in October. On the other hand we see an acceleration in annual rhythm with 14.2% increase in November against 13.3% in September.

The monthly increase in inflation is mainly due to the behavior of consumption functions: "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (+ 1.8%), "Clothing and Textiles, Footwear" (+ 1.8%), (+ 1.6%), "Equipment and Maintenance of Housing" (+ 1.6%) and "Other goods and services" (+ 2.7%).

The positive variation in the index "Food, drinks and tobacco" which represents over 50% of the household budget comes from, among other pf the rising : millet (+ 1.8%), grain corn (+ 1.5%), ground corn (+ 1.5%), of cornflakes (+ 3.2%), meat (+ 3.9% on average), the hotdog (+ 6.2%), fresh fish (+ 1.3%), bananas (+ 2.6%), giraumon (+ 2.3%), hake (+ 3.0%), green peas (+ 2.3% Eggplant (+ 2.5%), cabbage (+ 2.3%), carrot (-2.9%), tomato (+ 2.4%), yam (+ 1.4%), malanga (+ 2.0%), cassava (+ 1.6%), potato (+ 2.2%), potato (+ 3.0%), orange (+ 3.0% Lemon (+ 6.1%), other alcoholic beverages (+ 2.8%) and cigarettes (+ 1.2%).

The rise in the index "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" is linked mainly to rising on fabric prices (+ 2.7%), the costume, universal jacket (+ 0.9%), shirts (+ 2.7%), pants for men (+ 3.8%), underwear (+ 1.0%), dress (+ 2.3%), shoes and tennis (+ 1.7%) and sandals (+ 1.0%).

The increase in the "Rent of Housing, Energy and Water" index is particularly linked to the change in the items: housing rent (+ 1.0%) and charcoal (+ 4.5%).

The upward trend observed in the "Accommodation, Equipment and Maintenance of Housing" index was due to an increase in the price of living room furniture (+ 2.9%), the dining room (+ 3.0%) (+ 3.8%), mattresses (+ 5.0%), bed linen (+ 3.3%), curtains (+ 3.5%), tablecloths and the refrigerator (+ 3.1% ).

Finally, the increase in the "Other goods and services" index is mainly due to the increase in prices of shampoo (+ 1.5%), toilet powder (+ 9.9%), body cream (+ 4.6%) and the watch (+ 9.1%).
