Haiti - Security : Towards a special police unit to protect parliamentarians 13/02/2017 09:30:30
Youri Latortue, the President of the Senate, announced that discussions were under way with the National Police of Haiti (PNH) in the perspective of the creation of a Special Police Unit for the Security of Parliamentarians and the Legislative Building where security is currently provided by USPL (Security Unit of the Legislative Palace) agents. "How do you want a power as important as the legislature to be secured by security agents ? On the road, parliamentarians face serious difficulties with agents who have no jurisdiction outside Parliament, while the PNH Act provides for the formation of special units such as the USGPN at the National Palace," wonder the Senator Latortue. According to a law published in the official newspaper "Le Moniteur" in early February 2017, this parliamentary police force will have the task of ensuring the security of the legislative palace and parliamentarians in their movements. This Special Unit would consist of security officers currently in Parliament who would meet the admission criteria (age, judicial background, academic background, etc...) If the number of staff members is insufficient, a call for candidates will be launched to supplement the strength of this parliamentary police force. TB/ HaitiLibre
