René Préval was a fine connoisseur of Haitian politics, of its men and its problems, and he showed a particular sensitivity for the humble. The history will take stock of his achievements, his hesitations, his apparent complacency towards the international community in difficult moments of national life. He has not consolidated the institutions and management of the various governments he has formed, has not engaged the country's economy on the path of sustainable development. He was a simple and affable man. Withdrew from business, he continued to meet people in his voluntary but apparent retirement, in Port-au-Prince or to Marmelade and his influence on the course of events was greater than he admitted.
