Haiti - Jacmel : Agricultural revival in the commune La Montagne

In teh objective of accompanying the planters in the preparation of their plots of land for the spring campaign, the Jacques Khawly Foundation has started for two weeks, a set of agricultural works in the communal section La Montagne of Jacmel.

A team of operators, equipped with agricultural equipment and material including a tractor, come to support farmers in the preparation of their plots, to plant seedlings and seedlings in several habitations of La Montagne including : Colin, Terre rouge, Lavachi, Nan Wat, Grefye and Lavalèt.

In addition to the lack of machinery and technicians to accompany farmers, the inaccessibility of seeds and fertilizers, which are a handicap for the advancement of agriculture in this section, climate change also affects the agricultural sector of La Montagne. A situation that is beginning to discourage some farmers, while others have already abandoned their land to the Dominican Republic, Brazil or Chile, in search of a better life...

Very concerned about these problems, several leaders and notables sought the support of the Jacques Khawly Foundation not only to accompany the farmers technically, but also to revive the agricultural sector in this area.

While welcoming this initiative to encourage domestic production, Aladin Robespierre, the outgoing CASEC from La Montage section, reported that 21 plots of land (ranging from 25/100 to one carreau each) had already been plowed mechanically, adding that this activity intends to reach more beneficiaries through other habitations.

Earlier this week, a delegation led by Jacques Junior Khawly, one of the heads of the Jacques Khawly Foundation, accompanied by agronomists, doctors and other personalities as well as journalists, made a supervisory and exploratory visit to La Montagne . Jacques Junior Khawly recalled that the agricultural sector is one of the priorities of its Foundation, convinced that agriculture is a pole that can increase the economy of the country adding "We also plan to distribute seeds and fertilizer to farmers in the next days. However, my team and I, together with the growers' association, are going to do a preliminary evaluation."

Marie-France Ernest, Michel Nau and Joseph Espady, planters and notables of the area, did not hide their satisfaction with the work carried out.

However, over the past five years, the agricultural sector in this area has faced serious problems that have resulted in low production and a lack of income for farmers.
