Haiti - FLASH : Increase in fuel prices, the Government is giving way in part 12/05/2017 12:04:36
After 4 days of negotiation between the Government and trade union representatives of public transport on the increase in the price of fuel at the pump, no agreement has been reached, even if each party tries to make compromises to reach a consensus. The meetings are tense and stormy and several trade union groups have abandoned the negotiating table in disagreement with what had originally been submitted to the authorities following several meetings at the National Palace. For the second time, the government has revised downward its claims for increase, proposing Thursday that the price of the gallon of gasoline that currently sells around 189 gourdes per gallon goes up to 276 Gdes (+ 46% down), the price of the diesel gallon currently 149 Gdes rose to 229 gourdes (+ 53% unchanged) and the price of gallon of kerosene currently 148 gourdes rose to 218 Gdes (+ 47% down). For their part, the unions that have rejected the offer accepted an increase superior to their cons-proposal or an increase of 30 Gdes on a gallon of gasoline (+ 16%), 20 Gdes on diesel (+ 13%) and 20 Gdes on kerosene (13%) proposal also rejected by the Government. Dominique St Eloi, Coordinator of the National Central of Haitian Workers (CNOHA) said that late in the evening, trade unionists were called back to the negotiating table where the government would have proposed an agreement that provides an increase of 50 Gdes for gasoline (+ 26.5%), 40 Gdes for diesel (+ 27%) and + 33 Gdes for kerosene (+ 22.4%), but with in addition several accompanying measures for public transport unions, including 1 billion Gdes for the modernization of buses and bus stations... The talks are expected to resume on Friday under the criticism of the unions, which undergo in this marathon of negotiations, the strong pressure of the government, which seems more in a hurry to increase the price of fuels than to explore other alternatives...
