Haiti - Politics : Meeting of the High-Level Committee for the Elimination of Cholera

The High Level Committee for the Elimination of Cholera in Haiti, co-chaired by Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant and Special Representative of UN Secretary-General Sandra Honoré, met with the Prime Minister to discuss the situation of cholera in Haiti.

The members of the Committee noted the reduction in the number of cases and deaths in 2017 and the means implemented before reaffirming their common vision, according to the National Plan for the Elimination of Cholera, to eliminate the disease and its transmission into Haiti.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of long-term investment in the water and sanitation sectors as fundamental bases for the prevention of water-borne diseases. He recalled that the medium- and long-term response, with the support of the United Nations and donor partners "remained essential to consolidate the achievements..."

Marie Gréta Roy Clément, the Minister of Health and Sandra Honoré also noted the improvement in recent months of case control "The work of mobile rapid response teams has helped to better control the disease and decrease its impact," stressed Minister Clément.

The members of the Committee, including representatives of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), confirmed the success achieved in immunization https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-19050-haiti-health-1-million-vaccines-against-cholera-arrived-in-the-country.html particularly in the Greater South and reaffirmed the need to continue investment in infrastructure, water and sanitation in parallel with maintaining rapid response capacities, in order to eliminate the eventual transmission of disease https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21415-haiti-health-optimism-at-ministry-that-talks-about-elimination-of-cholera-by-the-end-of-2018.html
