Haiti - FLASH : Towards a permanent residence for immigrants benefiting from the TPS ? 14/11/2017 06:09:29
While the Government of President Donald Trump will decide by November 23 next if the program of Temporary Protection Status (TPS) will end or not for nearly 60,000 Haitians, January 22 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21016-haiti-flash-tps-extension-for-6-months-official.html , three members of Congress are drafting legislation that would allow anyone who receives the TPS to apply for permanent residence.
The bill, known as the ASPIRE Act, would allow any TPS-protected immigrant before January 1, 2017 to apply for permanent residence if they can demonstrate to a judge that they would face extreme risk if they returned to their home country.
"The TPS was created with bipartisan support to protect human lives," said Yvette Clarke, D-New York, who plans to introduce a bill with Miami Republican Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Democratic Representative of Washington, Pramila Jayapal.
