Haiti - Argentina : Food self-sufficiency soon a reality in Haiti
José María Vázquez, the Argentina Ambassador in Haiti, announced that the program of cooperation "Pro Huerta", conceived by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and the Ministry of Social Development, included 120,000 people. The program will now expand to 1 million people over 3 years and 4 million people over 7 years, so the entire population living in extreme poverty in Haiti [on a population of about 9 million people].

The program "Pro Huerta"" is adapted for Haiti, with 25 species of vegetables. It aims to develop the self-production and self-sufficiency. Argentina provides the know-how, the methodology of work, the seeds and qualified staff who will work in Haiti on an intermittent basis during four or five years. The ambassador said that Pro Huerta is funded by international agencies like the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and countries like Canada and Spain.

"Pro Huerta", is already successfully tested in Haiti, it helped top put into production more than 13,000 vegetable plots and small family farms, focusing in particular on the production of local seeds, the training and the use of small production system and of water supply.

The Ambassador also discussed of other programs of cooperation with the Haitian government, including: a database for public investment, developed by the Argentinean Ministry of Economy and already implemented, as well that the reinforcement and the transformation of the Haiti National Police (PNH).
